Picking an S&P 500 company at random on Tuesday gave you a better chance of finding a falling stock than a rising one. Yet the index gained 27.52 points. On an election day it is tempting to interpret a higher close as a vote of confidence from the market. The votes that actually determined this close were anything but evenly distributed. A one-percent move in a giant chipmaker counts for much more in the index than the same percentage move in a smaller company. AP’s closing report

Equities use the 4 p.m. New York regular-session close. Both metals use December 2026 futures settlements in dollars per troy ounce. The settlement windows end at 1:30 p.m. New York time for gold and 1:25 p.m. for silver. The dollar index measures the dollar against a currency basket. Its last observation here was around 6:05 p.m. New York time. The changes are relative to the respective daily observations on November 2, October 27 and October 6. The chart sets each series to 100 on October 6 and follows 21 observations. In the upper panel, the last segment of the Nasdaq-100 line turns up. It still ends near 90. In the lower panel, silver finishes near 81 while the dollar index remains close to 100. A slightly stronger dollar helps put Tuesday’s metals prices in context. The size of the changes over a month gives us reason to look beyond the dollar for a full explanation. Nasdaq-100 daily series · December gold · December silver
Who moved the average? Nvidia rose 2.3% and Broadcom gained 3.1%. AP identified them as the two biggest upward forces on the S&P 500, in that order. Apple fell 1.9%. The buildout of data centers affects the seller of scarce chips differently from a company that has to buy memory to put in its devices. Apple had beaten expectations for the previous quarter. A shareholder still had to ask how much profit would be left on the next device sold as component costs rose. AP’s reporting on the companies
A fund that gives roughly equal weight to the same companies makes a helpful comparison. The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF, RSP, slipped from $219.98 to $219.26, a 0.33% decline. The capitalization-weighted index registered the strength of its largest members. The equal-weight fund picked up more of the weakness across the list. Meanwhile, the VIX eased from 21.15 to 20.83, a drop of 0.32 index points. Options prices were allowing for slightly smaller swings over the coming month. Taken together, the breadth of the decline and the modest move in volatility suggest a return of buying to influential technology shares, with much less evidence of optimism across the board. The 10 a.m. release that mattered for bonds. Tuesday’s US labor report described September. Employers had 7.523 million open positions on the last business day of that month, above the 7.100 million economists had forecast in a Reuters poll. The August estimate also changed, from 7.079 million to 7.190 million. Against that revised level, the September increase was 333,000. The Bureau of Labor Statistics nevertheless described the month-to-month change as small in the context of its survey. Clearing the market’s forecast and establishing a clear change from the previous month are two different tests. BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey · Reuters survey and revisions

Suppose a restaurant was looking for a cook at the end of September and put the new hire on its payroll in October. That job could be in September’s openings count without appearing in September’s hires. Subtracting one line from the other would tell us very little about how many people failed to find work. For the bond market, the relevant possibility was that employers’ demand for workers had held up better than expected. On the Treasury’s own daily curve, the two-year yield rose two basis points and the ten-year rose four. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. When the market demands a higher yield, a bond promising fixed payments generally trades at a lower price. That was a change in market yields, a different event from a Federal Reserve policy decision. BLS definitions · Treasury daily par yields · Market reaction
Gold fell on a day we learned how much had been bought. Gold pays no interest. If an investor can earn a higher yield on a Treasury security, holding bullion means passing up a little more income. A stronger dollar can also make an ounce more expensive for someone whose income is in another currency. Commodities-market participants interviewed by Reuters pointed to both as gold gave up earlier gains. Silver’s percentage loss at settlement was about three times gold’s. The two metals serve different buyers, and the dollar alone does little to explain the size of that gap. Reuters metals report · December silver contract · Dollar index
A report released the same day by the World Gold Council lets us look at buyers on a much longer clock. From July through September, central banks and other official institutions added a net 321 metric tonnes to reserves. Physically backed gold ETFs worldwide took in 211 tonnes over the quarter. Counting the gold added to funds is useful because a rise in the dollar value of their assets can also come from a change in the gold price. These figures describe buying over three months ending in September. They tell us something about the scale of institutional demand while leaving open who bought or sold the futures contract that set Tuesday’s price. World Gold Council third-quarter demand report
AMD’s numbers came after the bell. AMD finished the regular session at $483.90, up 3.65%. Investors making that price had an estimate to work with. A premarket compilation put expected third-quarter revenue at $13.06 billion. The company subsequently reported $13.377 billion, up 45% from a year earlier. Data center revenue reached $8.5 billion, a 97% increase. The share price moved first. The accounts that showed where the revenue had come from arrived after the regular session ended. Management expects fourth-quarter revenue of about $17 billion, plus or minus 3%. That range describes a forecast for the coming quarter. The next regular session offers a better chance to see how much of that prospect was already in the price, and whether investors draw similar conclusions about other companies. The timing is particularly relevant in Seoul. Korean chip heavyweights had come under pressure earlier on Tuesday and the KOSPI lost about 3.6%. That market had already closed before AMD released the numbers. AMD outlook · AP’s Asian and US market recap
The next US employment report is scheduled for Friday, November 6, at 8:30 a.m. in New York, or 10:30 p.m. in Seoul. October’s change in payrolls will give readers another way to judge whether employers looking for workers are going on to add them. In the meantime, compare the direction of the equal-weight fund with the headline index. If both start rising together, that will offer more evidence that Tuesday’s buyers have found company beyond a handful of large technology stocks. BLS release calendar
